It’s been a fantastic year for Portuguese wine. In the much anticipated 2014 Wine Spectator’s top 100 list of the best wine in the world, Portuguese wines took the 1st, 3rd and 4th place.
The Wine Spectator’s top 100 wines list is selected by the editors and it includes the wines that they found to be the most exciting of the year. The selection of the 2014 top 100 wines was reached having tasted over 18,000 wines! The wines were blind tasted and they were ranked according to quality, value and availability.
With over 18,000 wines being tasted, to feature in the Wine Spectator’s top 100 wines is in itself an incredible achievement. For a country’s wine to take 3 of the top 5 positions in the list (including the first place) is simply stunning. We believe that these incredible results reflect how far Portuguese wine has come in recent years. For many people in the UK, Portuguese wine has not been been product that they would have been looking out for. In recent times, the UK market has been swamped with New World wines as well as wines from the traditional European wine producing countries such as France, Italy and Spain. Portuguese wine has very much been under the radar for many wine consumers. Hopefully the fantastic results in the Wine Spectator’s list will help to spread awareness of the wines produced in Portugal. Portugal deserves to have it’s wines recognised, not only are they incredible but they can now be considered the best wines in the world!
